Car Seats Buying Guide Tips

  • Rear-face as long as possible — the AAP recommends until at least age 2 or max weight/height
  • The safest car seat is the one installed correctly — practice installation before baby arrives
  • Check your vehicle's seat compatibility; some car seats don't fit well in smaller vehicles
  • Never buy a used car seat unless you know its full history (no crashes, not expired)
  • Look for seats with no-rethread harness for easier height adjustments
  • Consider an all-in-one seat if you want one seat from birth through booster stage

Car Seats FAQ

How long should my child rear-face?

The AAP recommends rear-facing until at least age 2, or until the child reaches the maximum height or weight limit of their rear-facing car seat. Many convertible seats now allow rear-facing up to 40-50 lbs.

When should I switch from infant to convertible car seat?

Switch when your baby outgrows the infant seat's height or weight limit (usually around 30-35 lbs or when their head is within 1 inch of the top). This typically happens between 9-18 months.

Is LATCH or seatbelt installation safer?

Both methods are equally safe when installed correctly. LATCH is generally easier for parents. However, LATCH has a weight limit (usually 65 lbs combined child + seat weight), after which you must use the seatbelt.
